Cannot create a server using the selected type – Eclipse tomcat

Some times if we delete the servers configuration in the workspace or if we move the workspace adding tomcat as server can become difficult thing.  We will hit with the error Cannot create a server using the selected type.

To resolve this error, try one or all of the following:

1.  Go to Window–>Preferences–>Server–>Runtime Environments and fix the broken path/link for the server

2.  Rename the org.eclipse.jst.server.tomcat.core.prefs to org.eclipse.jst.server.tomcat.core.prefs.bak (or you can delete this file). This file can be found at workspace.metadata.pluginsorg.eclipse.core.runtime.settings

3.  Rename the org.eclipse.wst.server.core.prefs to org.eclipse.wst.server.core.prefs.bak (or delete the file).  This file also can be found at the same location as above

  1. Thanks very much…. I struggle a lot for this error…Finally I got the solution through your reference…It’s working fine…

  2. I get this error but my tomcat path is correct & I can not find org.eclipse.jst.server.tomcat.core.prefs at the path suggested above

    ~/workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.runtime/.settings$ ls
    org.eclipse.core.resources.prefs org.eclipse.team.ui.prefs
    org.eclipse.debug.ui.prefs org.eclipse.ui.editors.prefs
    org.eclipse.jdt.debug.ui.prefs org.eclipse.ui.ide.prefs
    org.eclipse.jdt.launching.prefs org.eclipse.ui.prefs
    org.eclipse.jdt.ui.prefs org.eclipse.ui.views.log.prefs
    org.eclipse.pde.core.prefs

  3. please where i can find the :o rg.eclipse.jst.server.tomcat.core.prefs, i cant find it at the plugins folder into eclipse, please some help :(

  4. This didn’t work for me (also restarted Eclipse Indigo JEE).
    Tomcat is installed here (/usr/local/apache-tomcat-7.0.23)
I have it symbolically linked to /Library/Tomcat (so I can see it through folder browser on MAC OS 10.6.8; probably a better way, but I a way to do that yet).
I can select Tomcat 7.0 (and it runs and I can display my website and use example java servlets, etc. from oreily book), but I can’t get Eclipse to add it. I get the error message ” Cannot create a server using the selected type”
Not sure what to try next to fix this.
